Lecrae looks on the brightside in “Blessings”

Today, the Christian rapper known as Lecrae released his newest single, “Blessings”. The track features Ty Dolla $ign, and does not disappoint. “Blessings” is good enough that even non-religious people should be able to fall in love with it. Lecrae and Ty Dolla $ign  are grateful for where they are in their life, and it shows in their music. The track’s cover art features baby photos of Lecrae with his mother. You can watch his mother’s reaction to the artwork on the rapper’s twitter.

After a successful 2016, Lecrae is due to release a new project early this year. His most recent album, Church Clothes 3, featured Bay Area native E-40. The project reached number 12 in the Billboard 200, and it also managed to reach the top spot in the U.S. Christian, Independent, and Rap album categories.

Music fans don’t often think of hip-hop and gospel music being blended together, but Lecrae manages to do it with with much success. However, Lecrae is not the only artist to effectively blend these two seemingly distant genres. Chance the Rapper‘s Gospel-heavy Coloring Book has been Grammy nominated for “Best Rap Album”, showing that it is possible for emcees to successfully combine these two genres. It should be interesting to watch how much this branch of hip-hop grows, and whether or not more gospel-emcees can break into the mainstream. Check out “Blessings” below:
